WHEN YOU'RE FEELING OVERWHELMED

This is a list of suggestions on things to try when you are feeling overwhelmed.

Breathe! Long, slow breaths.

Identify what's wrong if possible, and/or what past stuff triggered it ('trigger tracking').

Go to a safe place in your mind.

Identify what you're feeling; use a list of feelings (there are some on the Web if you don't already have one) if necessary.

Journal.

Play a game or word game.

Listen to music--cheerful or depressing, whatever fits.

Take a bubble bath. Take your time in it.

Read.

Release anger--scream, stomp, sing loudly to angry music, journal, scream, write a letter you'll never send, do an anger-releasing ritual/prayer, etc...

Do artwork (collages included).

Call or email someone. Don't be afraid to!

Get and hold a stuffed animal.

Curl up under a blanket with a hot beverage and a good book.

Make yourself calming tea or hot chocolate.

Do or buy something nice for yourself. Flowers, a stuffed animal, whatever!

Watch a movie--a comedy to cheer you up, or a sad one to make you cry.

Take a long walk.

Start naming things about the present--this can be really simple, like "I am sitting on a green chair. It is sunny out. It is Wednesday."

Hold onto something, such as a rock.

Cook something to nurture yourself.

Hide under the covers or in a closet.

Take time out to play.
