CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE STATISTICS

  1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 18.

  1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 18.  

  1 in 5 children are solicited sexually while on the internet.  

  In 1999, an expected 3,244,000 children were accounted for to Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies as suspects of child abuse.

  Nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults (including assaults on adults) occur to children ages 17 and under.  

  An estimated 60 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse exist in America today.  

  90 to 95% of all sexual abuse cases go unreported to police.

  30-40% of victims are abused by a family member

  Another 50% are abused by someone outside of the family whom they know and trust..

  Approximately 40% are abused by older or larger children whom they know.  

  The median age for reported abuse is 9 years old.

  More than 20% of children are sexually abused before the age of 8.

  Nearly 50% of all victims of forcible sodomy, sexual assault with an object, and forcible fondling are children under 12.

  Children who grow up in a family where there is domestic violence are eight times more likely to be sexually molested within that family.

  68% of incest survivors were adult victims of rape or attempted rape by a non-relative at some point in their lives.

  Women who reported childhood rape were three times more likely to become pregnant before age 18.

  70 to 80% of sexual abuse survivors report excessive use of drugs and alcohol.

  70% of child sex offenders had between 1 and 9 victims. 23% had 10 to 40 victims.

Sexual Assault Statistics

  In 2007, there were 248,300 victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.  

  1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.

  17.7 million American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape.

  In 2003, 9 of every 10 rape victims were female.  

  In 2003, 1 of every 10 rape victims were male.

  2.78 million men in the U.S. have been victims of sexual assault or rape.

  60% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police, according to a statistical average of the past 5 years.

  Approximately 2/3 of rapes were committed by someone known to the victim.

  29% of rape victims were under age 11. 32% were 11 to 17. 22% were 18 to 24.

  More than 50% of all rape/sexual assault incidents were reported by victims to have occurred within 1 mile of their home or at their home.

  46% of rape victims considered or attempted suicide.

  7% of rape victims became pregnant or contracted a sexually transmitted disease.

  40% of rapists were under age 25.
